Since 1965, the 163rd Street Improvement Council has stood as more than an organization we have been a constant source of strength, advocacy, and hope for the South Bronx. What began as a response to a critical lack of resources in underserved communities has grown into a deeply rooted mission centered on equity, opportunity, and lasting change.
Our journey started with affordable housing, but our purpose has always gone beyond providing a roof. From the very beginning, we understood that true stability is not just about where you live it’s about having the support, resources, and community needed to rebuild, grow, and move forward. Over the decades, we have evolved into one of New York City’s most trusted, mission-driven organizations by staying committed to that belief.
Today, our work reaches far beyond housing. We serve individuals and families navigating some of life’s most challenging moments whether that means recovering from substance use, transitioning out of homelessness or incarceration, living with special needs, or simply searching for a second chance. We don’t just provide services we provide direction, support, and the opportunity to begin again.

Our mission is to create meaningful pathways to stability, dignity, and opportunity for individuals and families in underserved communities. We do this by providing access to safe, affordable housing and a wide range of supportive services designed to meet people where they are whether they are facing housing insecurity, navigating recovery, rebuilding after incarceration, or seeking a fresh start.
